Elon Musk and Tesla Motors made a HUGE announcement today, stating in a blog post that they "will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology."
He goes on to relate his experience with patents when starting his first company, Zip2, the importance of protecting intellectual property, but he draws the line when it hinders innovation.
"Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world’s most talented engineers."
Tesla's recent embracing of the open source philosophy comes from a desire to see more zero-emission cars on the road. With so many vehicles relying on fossil fuels already out there, Tesla Motors feels it doesn't stand a chance to manufacture enough electric cars on its own to make a difference in the carbon crisis. "We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform."
Whatever the reason, with so many patent disputes in the news this past year, it's refreshing to see an innovative company welcoming innovation and wanting to expand their technology without "lawyering up."
I wonder if this will extend to Musk's Hyperloop design...
