Immersive Technologies

Once the purview of gamers, virtual reality is poised to go mainstream. Along the way, it’s morphed into what’s being known as extended reality (xR) and added elements of 360 spatial audio, gesture recognition, natural language processing (NLP), and haptic feedback. Often considered a niche technology, we’ll explore its expansion of applications and its next generation capabilities.

Immersive Tech in Pop Culture

While the technology used in virtual reality and other immersive technologies is still being developed, the concept has been present in popular TV shows and movies for decades. Here are some examples of how the entertainment industry has seen Immersive Technologies through the years.

an enterprise spaceship

STAR TREK

Holodeck

Introduced in 1987. Set in 2364..

Offering the Enterprise flight crew a little R&R, this room was equipped with a grid of holographic emitters that uses transporter, replicator and repulser technology to create simulated environments, matter and even people.

MATRIX

The Matrix

Introduced in 1999. Set in 2199.

This impressively seamless depiction of neural interactive simulation functioned as a computer-generated dream world built to keep humans under control.

MINORITY REPORT

Precog Scrubber

Introduced in 2002. Set in 2052.

This device allowed police to interface with the psychic visions of "Precogs" whose brains generated imagery of crimes before they happenned. Gestures and sensor-lined gloves were used for timeline and image navigation.

MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE

Holotable

Introduced in 2008. Set in 2009.

Interestingly set more or less in present day, this holographic imaging system contains various data ports and can export to 3D printing systems.

READY PLAYER ONE

The Oasis

Introduced in 2018. Set in 2044.

The OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation) was a MMOSG (massively multiplayer online simulation game) started as an online gaming platform. It gradually evolved into a globally networked virtual reality world that most of humanity used on a daily basis.

SWORD ART ONLINE

Aincrad

Introduced in 2011. Set in 2022.

An exciting display of "Full dive" MMORPG, this system allowed players to use a device called a Nerve Gear that feeds virtual reality information directly into the brain.

BLACK MIRROR

TCKR Systems

Introduced in 2016. Set in Distant Future.

This immersive nostalgic therapy plunged its users into a world of memories by copying their brain into a device and connecting it to a mass simulation.
