CES 2019: Defining a New Smarter Society For Us All

The 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) brought together a mind-blowing myriad of different product innovations. With a projected 180,000 people and nearly 4,500 companies attending, there simply isn’t another tech-related event that competes with this in terms of either scale or diversity.

A long time ago (January 2014) at a Consumer Electronics Show far, far away (unless you live in Las Vegas), Intel unveiled their Edison “computer-on-module” development board aimed at wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. A mashup of an Arduino and Raspberry Pi, with a dash of WiFi, Bluetooth, and a 4GB of flash memory compressed into a package just a little larger than an SD card, the Edison has proven to be a formidable embedded platform. In the months since the world got their hands on the Edison boards, a lot of amazing projects have emerged. We’ll take a look at four Edison-based creations that have captured our imaginations.

Drones of a Feather Flock Together

One of the hottest gifts this past holiday season were consumer DRONES. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) projected one million of these devices were under Christmas trees this past December. The word Drone is one of the oldest official designations for “remotely controlled aircraft” in the American military lexicon dating back to 1935. “Drone” was adopted to refer to these aircraft as in homage to the queen in a bee hive, and became the official US Navy designation for targets for many decades.

2014: The Year of Wearables

2013 became the first year in history that the majority of American adults have owned a smartphone of some kind. [1] Now that carrying around a pocket-sized computer has become the norm, designers are exploring the use of wearables to find new ways for people to become even more connected to the Internet of Things. Consumers are showing an early interest causing some to estimate that over 200 million wearable devices will be shipped by 2018, driving more than $30 billion in revenue.
